PARENT-CHILD INTERACTION THERAPY

Parent-Child Interaction
Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based therapy for children ages 2-7 with emotional and behavioral issues, conducted through “coaching” sessions when you and your child are interacting in a playroom. A certified PCIT therapist will observe you with your child through a one-way mirror. You will wear an earpiece and the therapist will provide in-the-moment coaching to help you learn to manage your child’s behavior.

Benefits of a Coaching Approach

Live coaching provides immediate feedback for parents as they interact with their children and learn relationship-building and discipline skills. Among the benefits, according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report:
  • Parents are provided with opportunities to practice newly taught skills
  • Therapists can correct errors and misunderstandings on the spot
  • Parents are offered support, guidance, and encouragement as they learn
  • Treatment gains – for example, an increase in a child’s compliance – are recognized by the parent in the moment, which supports continued use of effective parenting skills
How many sessions are needed?
Sessions will take place weekly for an hour. During sessions, parents will practice and review skills. With consistent attendance, sessions typically last 12 to 20 weeks.

PCIT Treatment Phases

The first phase – relationship enhancement – focuses on establishing warmth in your relationship by applying skills proven to help children feel calm and secure. You are encouraged to praise positive behaviors and ignore unwanted behaviors.

In the second phase – discipline and compliance – the therapist will work with you to manage the most challenging of your child’s behaviors while remaining confident, calm and consistent in your approach to discipline.
